Sheriff amasses additional foes Ahead PDP Nat’l convention

The faiths of Ali Modu Sheriff, the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remain as national chairman of the party is getting murky, as obstruction to his ambition is becoming sophisticated by the day.

On one side, former ministers of the party have echoed their stand that they would not admit Alli Modu Sheriff remaining as national chairman of the party after May 21, 2016.

According to them, it would be dangerous for the party if the former governor is endorsed to maintain the position, even as they stated that they were ready to work with anyone else, as long as it is not Sheriff.

Secretary of the Ex-Ministers Forum, who stated this on Saturday in Abuja said, “We are ready to work with anyone else apart from Sheriff. We don’t care where the next chairman should come from but it must not be Sheriff,” he said.

This is coming at a time, governors in the party who made it possible for Sheriff to emerge as chairman seem divided over his tenure.

It was gathered that the governors’ group has been split as some have also taken an opposition stance on allowing Sheriff continue as chairman after the party’s national convention.

One of the governors said he and his colleagues, who begged members of the Board of Trustees and the National Caucus to accept Sheriff with a promise that he would leave office after three months, didn’t know how to go back to them again.

He noted that those still supporting Sheirff were only doing so for pecuniary gains, at the detriment of the party.

Also, a former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Chief Bode George, has warned Sheriff to abide by the party rules by stepping down on May 21.

George said, “I want to believe the chairman is an honourable man. He must honour his word to handover to an elected chairman at the National Convention on May 21 this year. This is the only way he will be on the positive side of history.”

George, who is a member of the party’s Board of Trustees, said it was funny that all those who contributed to the party’s defeat in the last elections had all fled the country.
