Nigerian Army releases GEJ’s former Aide, Ojogbane Adegbe

Just 4 days after a court instructed the release of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s Aide-de-Camp, Col. Ojogbane Adegbe, the Nigerian Army says it has released him on bail.

Counsel to Colonel Adegbe, Mr Ogwu Onoja, confirmed his release to reporters in Abuja.

He said his client was released on Friday afternoon.

A Federal High Court in Abuja had on Tuesday ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or any other organ of government holding Colonel Adegbe to release him on bail immediately in the most liberal terms.

Justice Yusuf Haliru in his ruling asked Adegbe to be release on bail on liberal terms pending his arraignment in court for any offence.

According to him, the EFCC ought to confine itself to its statutory responsibility of fighting corruption rather than serving as a holding cell for the Nigerian military.

Adegbe has been in custody of the anti-graft agency since February 11.

He was arrested in connection with the embezzlement of $2.1billion meant for the procurement of arms for the war against insurgency.

The military personnel reportedly collected cash- $47m and some Euros from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

He also dragged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to court to challenge his detention. His counsel, Ogwu Onoja, (SAN) is claiming N100 million damages for his detention, which he says violated his fundamental rights.
